Student Nutrition Programs in South East Ontario
Who We Are
Community Partnership Committees

Student Nutrition Programs in South East Ontario are going strong.  All across our region, schools are providing breakfast, snack and lunch programs to their students, in a joint effort to ensure that all children and youth have the nourishment they need to maximize their learning ability in the classroom.

Student Nutrition Programs (SNP) in Ontario is a provincially led, locally directed initiative which strives to provide all children and youth access to nutritious food while attending school.  Ontario's Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) supports these programs with funding for food and consumable supplies, as well as providing direction for program standards (guidelines) that ensures quality programs are offered across the province.  Through a contract with MCYS, The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, is the South East region's SNP Lead Agency, one of 15 in Ontario.  It is our role to provide support, direction and funding to schools offering nutrition programs in an effort to meet the expectations of MCYS.  To accomplish this, The Learning Foundation works closely with three local Community Partnership Committees:  Food for Thought; The Food Sharing Project and Food for Learning.    Each Committee is formed by local people who have an interest in the health, well-being and academic success of children and youth in their area.  These Committees are responsible for the strategic, financial and program management of the local student nutrition programs.  In the South East region, each Community Partnership Committee is staffed by a local coordinator who works closely with the Committee to manage the fund-raising, volunteer management and day to day operations of their programs.

The 2012-2013 school year was another successful year for Student Nutrition Programs in the South East Region.  Together, the four Community Partnership Committees provided the following:

Ministry of Children & Youth Services

The Ministry's vision of the Student Nutrition Programs is to provide children and youth access to healthy, nutritious food so that they have the best opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential.  Participation in a nutrition program can play an important role in maximizing student success and ensuring the healthy development of children and youth.  The programs have a universal approach, with all students have equal opportunity to participate regardless of their ability to pay.  No child is turned away.  Nutritious food helps kids learn, and in South East Ontario, we continue our commitment to student success.
