Who Are the Child and Youth Counsellors?

Child & Youth Counsellors in Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board are trained through graduation from a three year community college program and/or human service related university training, to work with children and adolescents who are experiencing social, emotional or behavioural problems.

Child & Youth Counsellors are guided by the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board's mission statement:

To provide excellent education which prepares our students to meet global challenges in a changing world, and the following: To provide advocacy and counselling services within the school setting, striving to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to develop to their fullest behavioural, social and emotional capabilities. In pursuit of this mission the Child and Youth Counsellor team is committed to enhancing the vital link between school and home.

The Child & Youth Counsellors of Hastings & Prince Edward are guided by the Code of Ethics of the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Workers.

What Support is Provided?

Child and Youth Counsellors are a school-based resource to help students, their famillies and school personnel. Child and Youth Counsellor's assist students with attendance, emotional, interpersonal or behavioural problems. Help may take the form of:

  • Individual, family or group counselling
  • Behavioural assessment and evaluation
  • Consultation and planning with educational staff
  • Classroom and school wide programming
  • Assistance with referrals to community support services
  • Immediate and ongoing support regarding tragic events
  • In-service to educational staff and community where appropriate

How Do You Access the Service?

Referrals for Child & Youth Counsellor service may come from:

  • school personnel
  • parents
  • self referral
  • referral by outside agency

For more information regarding referral process contact your child's school Principal.

All students under the age of 16 years who receive counselling support must have a signed parental consent.
